In the shortwave bands there are still stations broadcasting FAX from all over the world, it is possible at certain times of the day to receive weather maps, newspaper pages, weather reports and more. Transmission is done by modulating the signal into USB, and images are in black and white. Some FAX services can also be transmitted by satellites in VHF or UHF. FAX transmissions, also referred to as HF-FAX, WEFAX, METEOFAX and RADIOFAX are repeated throughout the day at synoptic times (0, 6, 12 and 18 o’clock) and there are several stations around the world, reception of these transmissions, is quite easy. They are easy to identify even by ear because of their slow modulation transmitting line by line, the signal consists of two tones representing black and white, plus a sync tone. The time required to transmit one page amounts to about 5 minutes. This transmission mode is very sensitive to noise, lines with noise or a crooked image may be displayed, but software allows within certain levels to correct the alignment and clean the image of noise. In the professional field there are specific hardware decoders that store and display images on the screen with the possibility of printing them.
Software You need a specific software that allows the demodulation of the audio signal in a FAX image, there are several free ones (for radio amateurs) I use FLdigi which is multiplattarofma, so it runs on Windows, Linux and Mac, it allows you to decode many digital signals including FAX
